It’s all too common for many of us to harbor a love-hate rapport with our bodies. This applies equally, irrespective of our weight. Be it the arm flab, the thigh cellulite, or the dialogues around stretch marks, there seems to be no shortage of issues causing distress. This feeling of discomfort intensifies particularly for those at the extreme ends of the weight spectrum.

Hansaji Yogendra, director of The Yoga Institute, in a conversation with indianexpress.com, explored the role societal standards play in causing stress over our bodies. According to Yogendra, failing to meet these societal expectations can warp self-perception and, consequently, impinge on mental health.

Despite understanding in principle that one’s worth extends far beyond physical appearance, it’s often challenging to truly internalize this understanding. This disconnect can result in more harm than initially anticipated.
