D9 and D8 Carts: What to Expect
To some of us, THC might just be THC. Others, however, may be aware that there are 100 if not more other “cannabinoids,” compounds that are chemically similar (adjacent, even) to THC, and which are naturally occurring in hemp plants.
In fact, there is more than one form of THC itself. There are three that are commonly, commercially available, which are Delta 8, Delta 9, and Delta 10 THC.
The one with which most users are common is Delta 9, also sometimes referred to as D9 – but a common alternative “form,” Delta 8, also known as D8, is growing in availability and popularity.
Here’s a quick overview of what to know when shopping through D9 and D8 carts (and other products).
What Is the Difference Between D9 and D8?
Both D8 and D9 are forms of THC, known as isomers. Chemically, they are actually extremely similar, nearly identical.
The only difference between the two cannabinoids is the location of a double bond on the molecule’s carbon tail; D9 is on the ninth, and D8 on the eighth.
It is also worth noting that D8 occurs in quantities too small in hemp plants to make extraction viable; as a result, it is usually produced by isomerizing CBD, another cannabinoid found in abundance in hemp plants.
With that said, despite the extreme chemical similarity between the two, they don’t behave quite the same way in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Because of the altered location of the double bond, D8 exhibits slightly different interaction with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system from D9, and as a result, its effects are said to be slightly different, too.
How Are the Effects Different?
Like Delta 9, Delta 8 THC is said to produce desirable effects such as euphoria, a state of relaxation and mental calm, and potentially even pain relief.
However, most users report that the effects of D8 are much milder than those of Delta 9. This makes D8 appealing to some who prefer less of an intense experience than D9 produces.
Also, some prefer D8 because the lowered intensity of effects helps them maintain a state of mental clarity – or so they say. It’s a suitable alternative for those looking for less intense psychoactive effects.
In addition, D8 offers many of the same secondary benefits as D9. It may potentially be able to help with pain relief, as well as easing nausea, improving the appetite, and even reducing sleep onset.
If you’re here because you’re interested in a more subtle, “toned down” version of D9, then D8 may be worth an investigation.
